Scoping Research on Banda Sea Ecosystem

Center for Deep-Sea Research (PPLD), Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) will organize a one-day International Symposium on Banda Sea Ecosystem (ISBSE) 2017.

Banda Sea has been the object of research activities since the 20th century, starting from the expedition carried out during the 1950s. One of the most prominent expedition ever accomplished in this water was Snellius, a joint collaboration between Dutch NIOS and Indonesian Institute of Science Office research scientists based in Ambon, resulted in three volumes of interesting findings that helped shape the knowledge and information of this tropical deep-sea. An Oceanology atlas was produced in 1999, but not much afterwards was done to compile and critically review what has been done fifteen years after. This International Symposium -the first about this particular ecosystem- is designed to carefully review what have been done in the past sixty years, their scientific contribution to the current understanding of this water, and what perspective gained from these research activities for the future management and conservation of its resources. For this purpose, the symposium will feature four renowned keynote and eight plenary speakers with major publications on Banda Sea Ecosystem.

The event will be included in the Conference Series as one of the main activities of Indonesia Science Expo (ISE 2017), within the celebration of LIPI 50th Anniversary under the theme “LIPI contribution in building the nation”.
